Consequences and Impacts of the SDGs: JIARE Analysis - By JIARE 2030 Agenda Committee
2030 Agenda! SDGs! STIs!
Abstract
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have created a global framework for progress, driving improvements in health, education, and gender equality, while fostering sustainable business practices. However, progress is stalled by climate change, conflict, and economic constraints, with over 800 million people still in extreme poverty and 120 million forcibly displaced as of 2024. The purpose of this article is to explore the consequences and impacts of the 17 SDGs.
===================
Introduction
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by the United Nations(UN) in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda, have had profound consequences on global policy, economic strategies, and social development, which the Joint International Academies of Research and Education(JIARE) is committed to. JIARE also supports science, technology and innovation(STI) is also adopted by JIARE in all its international projects. While they have acted as a crucial catalyst for sustainability, progress has been heavily hindered by multiple crises. The purpose of this article is to analyse the consequences and impacts of the SDGs in the process of the UN 2030 Agenda and the SDGs.
Key Consequences and Impacts
Key Consequences and Impacts of the SDGs are described below:
Policy and Institutional Integration: The SDGs have driven governments and organisations to integrate sustainability into their core strategies. They have helped strengthen global governance in previously weak areas, such as creating a "One Planet Network" for sustainable consumption (SDG 12) via the JIARE Legal and Ethical Programme and the JIARE Institutional Building Projects.
Green Economy Transition: The goals have spurred significant shifts toward green technologies, renewable energy, and responsible consumption, increasing global capacity in clean energy via JIARE Environmental Projects.
Progress in Health and Education: Since 2015, there has been notable progress in reducing child mortality, improving access to electricity, and increasing literacy rates, with 133 countries on track to meet SDG targets on under-5 mortality by 2030 via the JIARE Community Health and Education Projects.
Improved Data and Monitoring: The SDGs established a common language for monitoring progress, significantly improving the availability and openness of data for policymaking via JIARE Technological Projects.
Increased Focus on Inequality: The framework has intensified global efforts to combat gender inequality and provide social protection, with a 10% increase in social protection coverage over the last decade via JIARE Public Health and Education Projects.
Consequences of Limited Progress (Risks by 2030)
The consequences of limited progress of the SDGs are described below.
With less than five years remaining, the SDGs are largely off-track, with only 15-35% of targets on track to be met. Failure to accelerate action could result in:
Widening Poverty and Hunger: The COVID-19 pandemic and conflicts have reversed decades of progress. If trends persist, 575-590 million people could remain in extreme poverty, and over 600 million could be undernourished by 2030.
Environmental Degradation: Climate change is accelerating, with temperatures likely to surpass the 1.5°C threshold. Failure in SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land) is exacerbating biodiversity loss and natural disasters.
Unresolved Social Disparities: Disparities in education and healthcare persist. It is estimated that at current rates, it could take 140 years for women to be represented equally in positions of power.
Funding Gaps: Developing countries face a $4 trillion annual investment gap for SDG implementation, exacerbated by high debt and limited infrastructure.
Drivers of Stalled Progress:
The "polycrises" of the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and geopolitical conflicts—particularly the war in Ukraine—have acted as major disruptors, reversing progress in reducing inequality,
poverty, and environmental degradation
